With warm temps predicted this week I figured better ride while I can so headed out hitting some Lake Tomahawk and St. Germain trails. Lake Tomahawk had groomed and these trails were nice – the kind that make you want to ride all day. Yes there were some rough spots, thin areas and some bare spots but these trails I rode were overall in good condition. Then there’s St. Germain trails which hadn’t been groomed. They were rough and I couldn’t wait to get off them. After a lean season of snow, we finally get dumped on and they won’t groom – pathetic… You will find trails that are all white with good snow to some that have thin spots with snirt with the occasional carbide scrape to areas that have bare ground. Before this snow, we did have a couple days of thawing and some rain so some trails had puddles on them which froze. When the groom went through these areas it left some with bare ice, ice chunks and mounds of frozen snow so be careful (this wasn’t as bad on the Lake Tomahawk trails I rode as the groomer helped smooth them out).
Plowed road trails ranged from having good ice base to mostly bare pavement. Of course most plow drivers were trying to plow the ditch too so no banks to ride on.
Some lakes are not marked anymore. If you don’t know the lake and where to go, best not to cross it.
I’d get out and ride as there’s a warm up predicted to start tomorrow. Remember, conditions can change quickly. Trails that had good snow in the morning could have lots of bare spots by the afternoon.
Note: Oneida county trails (just south of St. Germain) have announced their trails will close Monday morning at 8am.
