I headed out for a ride hitting some Eagle River, Sayner, Lake Tomahawk and St. Germain trails. The Sayner and St. Germain trails I rode had been groomed. Lake Tomahawk had groomed some of their trails but not others. The Eagle River trails I rode hadn’t been groomed. The groomed ones were smooth overall but still had some bumps the groomer didn’t flatten out completely. The ungroomed ones ranged from pretty smooth to getting bumpy. I’m going with an overall good rating. After the thaw and freeze, trails have a hard feel to them. There’s a little snow on top of that hard pack/ice base but not a lot. I rode some trails that were so nice I wanted to turn around and ride again. Others had corners that are getting pushed out and thin on snow or icy. The groomer drivers are trying their best to bring snow back onto those corners. The carbides were still scraping on some corners. Some trails are brown from snirt while others are mostly to all white. Most plowed road trails have a decent base but some are starting to have areas where the carbides will scrape and there are a few bare spots.
Lakes are slushy if you get off the trail. There are areas of nasty ruts from where sleds went through the slush and the tracks froze. More lakes are getting marked but there’s still quite a few that aren’t. We don’t advise riding a lake unless it’s marked or you know it’s safe.
