Trails in Vilas county open tomorrow morning at 8am. Trails in Oneida county (just south of us) open tomorrow at noon.
Just because trails are opening doesn’t mean we’ll be riding. Temps warmed into the mid to upper 30s last night and we had some rain. Temps are holding steady today in the upper 30s and we’ve had some drizzle to light rain. The snow is going down. If we don’t lose too much snow and things freeze up, it could give us a good base for the trails. However, if temps don’t drop soon and too much snow melts, then we’ll need a bunch to start riding.
We measured the ice thickness a few days ago and found 5-7 inches. Right now the snow that was on top has melted leaving puddles on the ice. When this freezes it will add to the the overall thickness but there won’t be any snow to keep sleds cool or to lubricate slides. Stay of lakes until they are marked or you know that the ice is safe.
While some warmth and rain aren’t always a bad thing, it can also ruin what we have. The question is how much snow are we going to lose before temps drop and freeze things back up.
