Snowmobile Trail Report for Saturday, December 17, 2016

The heaviest of the latest storm hit south of us but we did get 3 inches of snow. This will help out conditions. We haven’t been out riding yet so can’t say exactly how trails are.

Trails in Vilas county are open. St. Germain is on the southern border of Vilas county so this means trails in St. Germain and north are open. Trails south of St. Germain are still closed and we haven’t heard of an opening date for them yet.

Clubs have been out to pan in an effort to pack the trails down and try to start a base. This new snow will give them more to work with but not sure if it’s enough to get regular grooming going yet.

Lakes are not safe for snowmobiles yet so keep off. Thursday afternoon we were measuring 2-4 inches of ice on east bay of Little St. Germain with most areas only having 2.5 inches.

We are still under a winter storm warning through midnight tonight so hopefully we’ll get some more snow. If you do ride be prepared for early season conditions with some thin spots, ruts that aren’t completely filled in and possible wet areas in swamps.
